Original Manuscripts
J.K. Rowling originally created The Tales of Beedle the Bard as a handwritten and illustrated manuscript. In 2007, she produced seven unique copies of the book, each bound in brown Moroccan leather and adorned with semi-precious stones. These manuscripts were given as personal gifts to people who had been deeply involved in the creation of the Harry Potter series. One of these special copies was auctioned for charity.
Auction and Amazon Purchase
In December 2007, one of the original manuscript copies was auctioned at Sotheby’s to raise money for Rowling’s charity, Children’s High Level Group (now known as Lumos). The winning bid was made by Amazon, who purchased the book for an astounding £1.95 million (approximately $3.98 million). Amazon’s acquisition brought significant attention to the collection, and they later shared extensive reviews and insights into the tales, generating global interest.
Published Editions
Following the auction, public demand for the stories led to the publication of The Tales of Beedle the Bard in both standard and deluxe editions. On December 4, 2008, the book was officially released to the public.
- Standard Edition: This edition includes the five fairy tales along with Albus Dumbledore’s commentary, providing context and additional information about the tales’ significance in the wizarding world.
- Deluxe Edition: The deluxe edition is a beautifully designed volume featuring additional commentary, illustrations, and a replica of Rowling’s handwritten introduction. It is encased in a slipcase and includes extra content that fans and collectors would cherish.
