Chris Columbus: “I would love to direct ‘The Cursed Child’ [film adaptation].”

November 5, 2021.

Variety interviewed Chris Columbus, director of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, for the 20th anniversary of the film release. The full interview can be read here. In it, Chris tells of his relationship with Jo Rowling, young actors Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint, and more. The last question, however, may raise some eyebrows:

There’s already a prequel series with “Fantastic Beasts.” Do you think there will be more “Harry Potter” movies?

I would love to direct “The Cursed Child.” It’s a great play and the kids are actually the right age to play those roles. It’s a small fantasy of mine.

Although it seems Chris Columbus is passionate about the idea of directing a film adaptation of the stage play, remember that Rowling and producer Sonia Friedman have said countless of times that there are no plans to adapt the story for the big screen and that they created the story with the focus of being represented on stage, knowing it would not work on any other format.
